Complete modernization of a SharePoint platform through cloud migration and SPFx development with React

Context

The organization was using an outdated on-premises SharePoint environment with significant limitations:

  • outdated interface and inconsistent user experience
  • lack of modern functionality: dynamic WebParts, Teams integration, mobility
  • high maintenance costs and performance issues
  • inability to scale for new applications
  • manual workflows slowing down team operations

To increase efficiency and modernize internal workflows, a transition to SharePoint Online and reimplementation of digital components using a modern framework was required.

Implemented solution

Migration and modernization were carried out in three phases:

  1. Full SharePoint on-prem → SharePoint Online migration
  • audit of information architecture and permissions
  • migration of libraries, lists, and sites using a cloud-first methodology
  • permissions, groups, metadata mapping
  • reorganization of information architecture in SharePoint Online
  • configuration of governance and security policies (MFA, DLP, retention)
  1. Custom development with SPFx + React Framework

For existing on-prem custom functionalities and new organizational requirements, modern WebParts were developed in SPFx:

  • complex forms using React + Fluent UI
  • connection to multiple lists via Graph API and PnPjs
  • dynamic display of data in tables, grids, and interactive cards
  • responsive components compatible with Teams and SharePoint
  • intelligent caching, advanced filtering, pagination, state management

Examples of developed modules:

  • Operational dashboard with real-time KPIs
  • Document portal with dynamic metadata
  • Modern helpdesk with Power Automate integration
  • Custom WebParts for project management
  1. Integration with Power Platform & Microsoft 365

The platform modernization included:

  • document approval automation (Power Automate)
  • digital forms for departments (Power Apps)
  • interactive management reports (Power BI)
  • automatic notifications in Microsoft Teams
  • security and data governance policies

 

Results achieved

  • modern user experience aligned with Microsoft 365 standards
  • response time improved by over 50% due to cloud architecture
  • complete elimination of dependency on local servers
  • reduced operational costs by removing hardware maintenance
  • automation reducing manual work by up to 40%
  • unlimited scalability for new SPFx and Power Platform applications

 

Overall impact

The organization now has a modern, fast, secure, and fully extensible platform.
The migration created the foundation for AI adoption, advanced automation, and modern digital processes.
